The Weaponization of Health Care and Education is Incompatible with Democracy

Terror: noun
ter· ror ˈter-ər  ˈte-rər
plural: terrors

Violence or the threat of violence used as a weapon of intimidation or coercion

— Merriam-Webster1828

While the Western elites continue to pour money and materiel into their terrorist proxies in Kiev and Tel Aviv American society is grappling under the iron heel of a different kind of siege. Indeed, two of the deadliest truncheons in Washington’s war on the American people are the weaponization of heath care and the weaponization of education. The hijacking of these two indispensable institutions by demonic corporate forces is antithetical to democracy and has played a critical role in spawning this anarchic dark age of neoliberal barbarism.

In any civilized society it must be accepted as self-evident that good public health care and education are rights and not privileges. Once these two institutions fall under the aegis of the latter democracy is no longer sustainable. As it is presently constructed, American education exists to cultivate indentured servitude through the generation of student loan debt (currently in excess of 1.7 trillion dollars) while relentlessly fomenting philistinism, tribalism, blind obedience, consumerism, overspecialization, Zionism, biofascism, humanitarian interventionism, Russophobia, unfettered capitalism, the cult of careerism and the myth of the meritocracy.

As Samuel Beckett warned in Gnome, the growing utilitarian trend in education portends a profoundly ominous future:

Spend the years of learning squandering
Courage for the years of wandering
Through a world politely turning
From the loutishness of learning.

Without an education system anchored in the humanities students are increasingly raised in a culturally, intellectually, and morally impoverished world where nothing is valued except money and one’s career.

The multicultural curriculum and identity studies have usurped the position of the humanities and constitute an anti-humanities curriculum, as the foundational building blocks of America’s heritage are now routinely vilified as “racist,” a ruse for the cultivation of extreme forms of anti-intellectualism and sectarianism. However, just as a broken clock is right once during the day, the neoliberal obsession with “white supremacy” has backfired with regards to the Zionist entity, as in this particular instance this is, in fact, a classic case of white supremacy where an authoritarian settler colonial regime relentlessly oppresses natives of color.

One of the most striking aspects of the multicultural society is the prevalence with which one encounters Americans with prestigious degrees who can speak at length about a highly specialized thing in the visual arts, performing arts, medicine, academia, STEM, or finance yet are incapable of seeing the forest for the trees outside of their narrow area of focus. This phenomenon is readily observed with physicians who can speak tirelessly about a subspecialty such as brain tumors or hematology without having even the most rudimentary understanding of the deplorable state of informed consent and the absence of single-payer, let alone the Ukraine war, or the recent wars in Libya, Syria, or Yugoslavia. This transforms what was once a reasonably educated middle class into an army of technocratic automatons.

I once attended a wedding during the George W. Bush years and bumped into an acquaintance who was working as a corporate lawyer at the time. The Military Commissions Act had recently been passed and I asked him what he thought of it, to which he replied, “I haven’t been following it.” This is someone who has degrees from Harvard, Oxford, and the University of Chicago. Lamentably, overspecialized sociopaths with the most advanced degrees that are operating intellectually at the level of a kindergartner has become an integral feature of neoliberal America.

That the most indoctrinated Americans often have the most elite degrees should come as no surprise if we acknowledge the fact that blind obedience is extolled and rewarded while the humanities and critical thinking are relentlessly heaped with scorn, ridicule, and contempt. The violence that has been meted out to the anti-Zionist college protestors, often with the full support of their universities to which they pay obscene tuitions, underscores academia’s disdain for the peasantry and these brave students that have heretically strayed from their ideologically designated reservations.

Between the destruction of the humanities, horrendous overcrowding, and the loss of any semblance of discipline the inner city public schools have been degraded to the point where many of these schools function more as juvenile detention centers rather than centers of learning. Upon arriving at the front gate students routinely encounter metal detectors and armed guards. How can “education” take place in such an environment? It is no coincidence that these schools invariably fail to teach their students classes in civics.

Increasingly, American youth are immersed in an appalling environment of moral degradation, nihilism, and historical erasure, a prison of the soul where students are inculcated with the pernicious idea that success can only be measured with regards to dollars and cents leading to a dissolution of reason and compassion, without which a human being is nothing more than a burned-out husk, an amorphous phantom in the night.

Deleterious health outcomes and serious socio-economic problems tied to a lack of a humane nationalized health care system include millions of medical bankruptcies, patients postponing care they cannot afford, an ever-present fear of losing one’s job and one’s insurance along with it, Americans trapped in toxic marriages where one spouse is dependent on the other for their health insurance, doctors taking money and gifts from drug companies leading to an erosion of informed consent, the regulatory capture of health care agencies and medical journals by pharmaceutical companies, patients forced to work with doctors they do not wish to work with, Medicaid patients that are not allowed to earn more than a few thousand dollars per year, a deranged system of hundreds of different health insurance plans exacerbating alienation and atomization, millions of Americans that are compelled to abandon their health insurance each year as their jobs and incomes change leading to incessant disruptions in doctor-patient relationships and patients that are suddenly unable to obtain medicines indispensable to their well-being.

Regarding this last point: try talking to almost any American doctor about your fear of losing your insurance or of being chronically under-insured. You are speaking with someone who is living on another planet, as they are accustomed to always having one of the very finest plans, rendering the world in which the average American inhabits utterly alien to them. Can a country with such extreme forms of inequality even be called a real society?

One of my high school classmates has become the director of one of the biggest human rights NGOs, and I see her posting Russophobic propaganda on Twitter from time to time. The point here is that her keeping this prestigious position is contingent on her parroting whatever the mass media says. Who in such a coveted job wants to learn all about the Banderite putsch and the siege of the Donbass, start openly questioning NATO designs in Eastern Europe, and then lose a great income along with one of the best health insurance plans? The same could be said of the doctors who intuitively sensed that “the science” behind the Branch Covidian coup was nonsense, but were afraid to risk their jobs which they need to pay off hundreds of thousands of dollars in student loans while maintaining their excellent health care coverage. In neoliberal America, the line between “success” and selling hot dogs in Central Park is very fine indeed.

The perversion and defilement of these two healing professions, so vital to solidarity, knowledge, and the cultivation of the human spirit into instruments of subjugation and control has destroyed any semblance of a humane society and serves to further terrorize a population already reeling from grievous assaults on the First Amendment and bodily autonomy, along with a catastrophic crisis of household debt.

It is noteworthy that the authorities in Donetsk and Lugansk maintained nationalized health and education systems during their eight year war with the Banderite junta prior to the Russian military intervention, and this was achieved at a time when they existed in an existential no man’s land, being neither a part of Russia nor Ukraine. This deep state hijacking of education and health care, institutions which have been crying out for nationalization for decades, is indicative of a ruling class that has abdicated any sense of social responsibility towards its citizens.

Ultimately, American health care and education are not run by incompetents but by rapacious and despotic oligarchic forces. That these hallowed institutions have been transformed into tools of oppression is a monstrous demonstration of their barbarism. The horrors this has unleashed threaten civilization itself.

metastasizing bureaucracy: randi goes to DHS

more adventures in safety as tyranny

i’ve said it before and i’ll say again: trading liberty for safety will inevitably and always cause you to lose both.

because this is a simple and timeless truth:

i’m dianna moon glompers, and i approve this message…

and this is why you need to be very, very worried when the pseudopods of the various amoebae of the security and regulatory state start trying to join together into bigger blobs. because that’s how the safety cancer metastasizes.

consider america’s most dishonest totalitarian teacher talking point pusher randi weingarten, head of the powerful american federation of teachers union that has done so much to make education unsafe, unaffordable, ineffective, and unaccountable.

her behavior during covid was nothing short of despicable. she wrapped herself in the cloak of “safety” to keep schools closed to use the deprivation of education as a lever to drive concessions on teacher pay other work bennies then had the unmitigated gall to cast herself as having been “the champion of opening.” this woman is an amoral manipulative apparatchik to the core and serves nothing but her team.

she opposes parents having knowledge of or say in education and sees children as a “ward of the state” and parents as subservient and ancillary. she seemed to favor the trend of trying to label parents opposing radical curriculums and demanding in person schooling as “domestic terrorists.”

and guess who just brought her in as an advisor?

yup. DHS.

now, call me mr cynical paws, but “radical teacher’s unions, now with SWAT teams” seems a poor recipe for educational reform.

this whole system has become one big tyranny of failing up. the worse you behave and the more damage you do, the more everyone wants you onside and hands you more power so long as you’re going to use it in support of whatever oppressive purpose du jour happens to be.

they are happy to use any pretext to justify the taking of power and the “credential” gained by the last failure is used to provide proof of bona fides to advise on the next one. it’s a circular self-promotion scheme to keep using the honors they bestow upon one another to justify the grant of further prerogative.

it has no sense, no morality, and no accountability.

it’s just a will to power.

and they are happy to put darth vader in charge of the ewok village so long as it means they get to keep command.

this combination of oppressive guild dominance than can appeal to “it being for the children” getting in bed with the hyper-powerful and utterly ideologically crooked homeland security agency means they are really coming for your kids.

this is the opening move to a nasty middlegame of getting the folks who can unaccountably hunt “terrorists” (itself a deeply stupid, dishonest, and largely unconstitutional process) into the school system in support of who know what impending imposition as we the people tire of the content of public schools and seek change. it is not the sign of a government looking out for you. these are people looking out for and after their own power.

a great deal of deeply warranted demand for change on schools is brewing.

they would seek to cast this not as “a reason to demand change” but as “terrorism and hate crime.”

these two agencies coming together cannot possibly be a good thing for we the people or they the children or anything resembling choice.

seriously, what is the honest case here for “this is a good idea”?

this sort of safety theater as pantomime justification for uncriticizable totalitarian control cannot be countenanced.

these agencies and organization systems cannot be fixed.

they must be eliminated.

there will not be “better people next time” there will just be more of this, on and on, bureaucracy without end.

these are the real issues. not donkey. not elephant. it’s freedom and the ripping out, root and stem, of all these agencies.

they are trying to slip this all by and into being as back-room unwatched actions of unelected officials. there was a time when this probably would have worked. there was a time when this might have gone unnoticed.

but not any more.

too many have wakened and too many see too much.

and now it is out turn to put these would be regulatory and security state suzerains to the inquisition.

the facts are simple:

these are the people who want to disarm you, censor you, and monopolize the information you see. these are the people who claim primacy over you in terms of prerogative on what your children should learn.

it’s intolerable and it’s time we stopped tolerating it.

school funding should be shifted to students, not systems.

the department of education should be closed and its offices sold for condos.

DHS should be disbanded. they have become a grotesque parody of a protector that causes more damage to the rights and freedoms of americans than all of terrorism combined could ever hope to.

it seems we are at something of a societal break point where these agencies either agglomerate into one edifice of control with no daylight between education, anti-terrorism, and thought police or where we start tearing this out and reatking that which is ours.

the people currently inhabiting these agencies know only one thing and it’s growing fiefdoms.

that is antithetical to our freedom and thriving.

one of us has to go.

choose wisely.

"The Uses of Literacy" by James Thompson

The Uses of Literacy

England is basking in the good news that children can read. Formerly, that was not the case, but now a new technique has been deployed, and British Brats are up there with Finnish sprogs and Singapore nippers, revelling in new-found literacy. Rarely has a new King got off to such a good start. A Carolean Age dawns.

This will lift the spirits of benighted teachers, who have always been cast as well-meaning losers, child-minding for brighter sisters living corporate lives and doing interesting and clever things while the pedagogues struggle with their surly offspring, attempting to interest them in literature and preventing them from stabbing each other.

Let’s give some background on literacy. It is not very difficult to teach children to read. You teach them the alphabet, until they can recognise, write and recite all the letters in alphabetical order. Chanting them in alphabetical order is a good way for children to learn this. Then you teach kids that each letter is associated with (“makes”) a sound. Then you teach them that by putting the letters together you make a word. Then you pick some regularly written words to illustrate the principle, and teach them how to blend sounds to make a word.

The cat sat on the mat.

For decades, reading was taught that way. (Numbers, and “times-tables” were also taught by rote learning). Kids learnt to read. The process was repetitive but effective. Perhaps teachers were bored by it so in 1926 US educationalists proposed that the boring old method be dropped in favour of “look and say” in which students were taught to recognise the look of a whole word, and recognise and say it. As you may have already worked out, when the student comes to a new word, then they are stuck. They do not know how to blend the letters into the spoken word. A case of “look and don’t say”.

Since the UK is heavily influenced by anything new coming out of the US, British teachers fell in with this new fashion (or most of them did). Reading became difficult, and dyslexia became common, and very fashionable. Being unable to read was presented almost as a guarantee of high creativity, super-normal perceptiveness, and eventual billionaire status.

Some teachers, mostly in private schools, held out, as did cramming schools and private tutors, who relied on the old methods. Eventually, after much resistance from the educational establishment, controlled studies showed that the “phonics/blended phonics/synthetic phonics” method was easily superior, and has now made a comeback. England finally won the phonics war. This is good news.

https://www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-we-won-the-phonics-war-and-got-england-reading-fblxm89lk

So, let us bask in the good news. All the main media outlets covered the story, but without linking to the original research. Why don’t they do that? Are they lazy, conceited, or just incapable of understanding scholarship? Perhaps journalists have limited literacy, and simply regurgitate the press pack provided for them.

Here is a useful explanatory link which gives more detail:

https://www.iea.nl/studies/iea/pirls

They are studying children in their 4th year of education, when they are about 9 years of age. This might seem a bit late, since children should be reading from age 7 onwards, but the exam can be more testing at this later age. They should have learned to read and now be reading to learn.

Anyway, the study was done in 2021, and also 2022, because of the pandemic. This makes comparison with previous years and between nations a little difficult, but not impossible. The results are presented in the way which I have come to expect from educational authorities: ponderously, and with little in the way of statistical analysis. It is infuriating to see a well-resourced group get access to such a large sample and report their results in such a dull way. For example, what is the correlation between reading fluency and reading comprehension? The section which apparently deals with this gives no statistical answer.

However, even restricting one’s self to diagrams, some interesting material can be found. The authors realize that people will wish to know what the scores mean, so they spell out what would constitute the main levels, including the advanced level of understanding of informational texts, which a country needs to get anywhere.

Finally, some results that make sense. Singapore is light years ahead of the pack. An astounding 35% of their students reach advanced level. Singapore has a bright future. Hong Kong and Russia have 21% at that advanced level, England has 18%, and then the percentages slide slowly down to single figures. This is the “smart fraction” and many countries have a very small smart fraction. Indeed, by the time they are old enough to emigrate, the number left in those countries will be very small. Minorities are attracted to the few places where they meet their soul mates, in this case, their brain mates. They will go to international company headquarters, to research institutes and perhaps even to some universities, but few will stay at home.

Do the authors plot these results against country IQs? Of course not. What would that have to do with anything?

Anyway, has England done well?

The results for England were looked at by the UK Department for Education (and they do some actual statistics, which is a relief):

https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/1156633/PIRLS_2021_-_national_report_for_England__May_2023.pdf

England’s overall score is 558, which is not significantly different to previous scores in the 5 year cycle of testing. So, not too much of a story here. Also, to be blunt about it, if you look at the first table, the English results are 10 standard errors of the mean below the Singapore level. Rankings show England in 4th place, the statistics show it is a low place compared to the front runner.

England may be higher in the ranking, but England’s score has not improved. It might be that the other countries were tested during Covid, and did less well. The apparent English improvement may be due to poor readers improving somewhat. The better readers are at the same level.

Is phonics worth it?

There is a positive correlation between performance in the year 1 phonics screening check and performance in PIRLS 2021. The overall correlation between year 1 phonics check and PIRLS 2021 was 0.46, indicating a moderate, statistically significant relationship between performance in the 2 assessments. This is similar to the relationship seen between PIRLS and phonics scores in 2016.

Several pupil characteristics significantly predict PIRLS 2021 performance in England based on a multiple linear regression analysis. The strongest predictor of PIRLS performance was the year 1 phonics check mark, for which a 1-point increase was associated with nearly a 4-point gain in PIRLS 2021 overall reading performance. Number of books at home was the second most powerful predictor of overall reading score, with higher numbers of books associated with higher PIRLS scores. This was followed by eligibility for free school meals (FSM).

The authors don’t mention it, but numbers of books at home is a proxy indicator of parental IQ, as is free school meal requirements.

They conclude that the phonetics test does useful work, and I would assume that it is worth teaching reading by using the phonics method at the national level.

Why did teachers ever drop phonics? There was a long phase in which it was denounced as being old-fashioned, and the new cool way to learn to read was to recognise the entire word without spelling out the letters. So, “synthetic phonics” is not a new technique, it is merely a return to traditional teaching methods.

To summarise:

The English pay attention to rankings, rather than absolute scores, thus hiding significant differences.

England appears to have risen in the rankings because it adopted phonics. Phonics is the best method for teaching reading. The PIRLS international study in fact shows that England did roughly as well as in previous years, but apparently rose in the rankings because other countries may have fallen back a little because they were tested during the Covid pandemic.

The PIRLS study is not an easy read, and if there is more good stuff in it, it is well hidden away. Their techniques are not bad, but their treatment of the results is dull.

Educationalists never mention intelligence, cognitive ability, or mental ability. Despite that, they keep finding evidence that intelligence is heritable, and that children of brighter parents learn faster, but instead tacitly imply that ability is caused by having books in the house and being rich.

Teaching kids may be a dull task, but, done properly, it can be rewarding.

So, all together:

“The cat sat on the mat.”
